AFGRI CORPORATE SOCIAL INVESTMENT (CSI) PROGRAMME

2. ACHIEVEMENTS

2.1.  Flagship Projects

Roundabout PlayPumps

Roundabout PlayPumps

  • PlayPumps installed at 5 primary schools in Mpumalanga & Limpopo
  • An initiative that supplies water to rural communities through the reconstitution of disused boreholes, with the water pumped by children playing on a roundabout.

Impact

  • Approximately 5000 individuals have access to water.
  • Spin off to learners - Vegetable gardens

Poultry Training Facility @ Buhle Farmers Academy, Delmas

Poultry Training Facility @ Buhle Farmers Academy

  • A dedicated poultry training facility fully sponsored by AFGRI
  • The 6 poultry units house 400 chickens each and each student is responsible for 100 chickens
  • Annual intake - 48 students

Impact

  • Students are together in one area, greatly improving the production tasks and learning conditions for trainers and students alike
  • Ventilation improved and manageable - mortality rate (current batch at 2%)
  • The AFGRI facilities adhere to the basic principles of broiler production and provide students with a working example of a unit that can easily be constructed on their farms.

Mpumalanga School Food Gardens

Mpumalanga School Food Gardens

  • Joint project with SASOL, ARC, Standard Bank and Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture
  • Mpumalanga Schools Art Competition at 1200 schools
  • AFGRI provided 32 watering cans, 16 shovels, 16 rakes, 16 spades, 32 garden sets, 16 garden forks and 8 weed eaters

Impact

  • Vegetables supplement nutritional programmes at schools
  • Orphans were identified and were recipients of vegetables for home consumption

Asiphephe Primary School – Pinetown, KZN

Asiphephe Primary School

  • Classrooms, an ablution block for both 30 teachers and 1222 learners, AFGRI branded stationery sets, furniture

Impact

  • Learners’ absenteeism reduced, especially in winter and rainy seasons
  • Concentration span of the learners increased due to comfortable surroundings
  • Teachers’ morale has been boosted by the improved working environment
  • Good working relationship with KZN Dept of Education established

  • AFGRI bus – provides decent transport to 94 farmers

2.2. Social Relief Projects

Tateni Home Care Services, Mamelodi

Tateni Home Care Services

  • Monthly food supply to 3 drop-in centres

Impact

  • 435 orphaned & vulnerable kids fed daily

Borotho ba Bophelo, Midrand

Borotho ba Bophelo

  • Monthly food supply

Impact

  • Approximately 106 destitute people and economic migrants (mostly from Zimbabwe and Lesotho) are provided meals three times a week and additional items such as toiletries

Manger Care Centre, Benoni

Manger Care Centre

  • Established in 1987 to care for the destitute, homeless, abandoned, including recovering addicts
  • Through the Soup Kitchen, 1 700 meals are provided to school children, 5 days a week, during school terms
  • AFGRI donated inputs and tools to assist in the establishment of a vegetable garden

Impact

  • Vegetables from the garden supplement the current staple diet
  • Surplus is being sold in the local Pick n Pay in Benoni
